  • Sharon Hawkins

Michael in Stephenville.  The girls and I came to Holder today to visit and spend the night tonight with Jerome and Ruth because we have to drop Lya off at church camp tomorrow at Cisco.  As always here in this little corner of paradise, we were having a wonderful time until Travis Stilwell called me this afternoon.  I instinctively knew that something was terribly wrong.

Sharon Hawkins, one of my favorite people at SHS, had worked for several years in the main office at SHS.  The last few years, she has worked as Athletic Department Secretary.  Everytime I saw her, she would ask about Lorena and would give me words of encouragement.  Her daughter, Stacy, is one of my favorite ex-students of all time.

Today, the Hawkins were having a family outing at Lake Proctor when something happened and Sharon drowned.  My heart is crying as I type this.  She was a little younger than Lorena, and Stacy is Lorraine's age.  I called Rainey to tell her and to have her call the Becks and Sandra Walton, and her first response was to cry for Stacy.  Rainey knows what it is like to lose a mother who is perfectly healthy one minute and then is gone.  My heart goes out to the family, and I would ask your prayers for all of them.

I reiterate my supplication to you all.  Love your families as if there will be no tomorrow because in this world there may not be.  Sharon, we love you, we will miss you, we will never forget you, and we are better people for knowing you.  Stacy and the rest of the Hawkins family, we love you, and we mourn your loss.  And we pray God's blessings on you.

  • OMG, such a tragedy! How dreadful.....never knowing what's in store for us! God's will! Hope the family can deal with the grief, especially Stacy!

  • Michael, cousin Jean here,

I was sorry to learn about your school co-worker drowning.  We never know what tomorrow will briing....live for the moment at hand, talk to God and love Jesus.

I was pleased to learn you had gone to Holder, the place of our families roots.  Wasn't it Ruth that was writing a book on our families?  Audean had told me about a book being written.

On the Rootsweb Erath Co., genealogy site, there has been much discussion about the schools in your  part of Texas.  A Mr. Charles A. Wyly gives good narration on Texas history with his responses.  Cindy, your friend  has had several postings.  I get to know a lot of folks by name in and around Stephenville that way.

    Praying for Lorena's recovery.

    Take care-Happy Father's Day,

    Cousin,

    Jean

  • So sorry about your news...but you are right...hold closely each family member, tell them you care...We never know our words of love and friendship may be to last they ever hear. It's easy in this current world to get caught in the speed of it without taking to stop and hold our vast resources love and nature.

  • Oh, Mike... they announced Sharon's death yesterday at church. When they first said her name my brain couldn't process it. I heard the name, knew the name but thought it must not be the same person until Doug kept talking making me realize the reality. Sharon and Kyle graduated together and he's known her family his whole life. I met Scott & Sharon a decade or so ago when Kyle and I were on the Fun Fair Committee with them. She was alway smiling and always so nice. Yesterday all I could think of was Scott and Stacy... planning a funeral on Father's Day. My heart aches for them.

  • I am so sorry.  Life is so fleeting and uncertain.  This makes me so much more aware of my own family.
